Two Portuguese Reds

Artisans of the Wine Country series by New World Wine Club

2016 Vinho Tinto
2012 Tempranillo

Fan of the reds? Interested in trying reds that originate from Portugal but are successfully grown in Northern California? Talented winemaker Vern Vierra brings Portugal’s backyard to life with the picture perfect weather of the Lodi Valley.

The 2016 Vinho Tinto is an everyday table wine, much like the French’s vin de pays. It’s full fruit palate accompanied by low tannins makes it the perfect wine to accompany almost every meal.

The 2012 Tempranillo, one of the noble grapes of the world, has more tannins, strong earthy tones, and savory flavors. It's a deep garnet-colored wine, that pairs well with barbecued meats, casseroles and Mexican cuisine.

Best of the Reds

Hunt Cellars 2009 Bon Vivant Cabernet Sauvignon

Trinidad Estates 2013 Acaibo

Wines so fine but great with a rib eye or T Bone grilled to perfection. Hunt Cellars has created a Cabernet Sauvignon to perfection! This wine was harvested, hand crafted, crushed and put in barrels with perfect balance meaning mother nature provided the ultimate ripeness, acidity and balance. Small berries, low yields and dramatic mountain soils create intense varietal character in this noble wine. Chewy tannins wrap around intense ripe cherries, sweet berries, currants and toasty oak. Everything wine maker David Hunt does is done to perfection.

The 2013 Acaibo is made in beautiful Sonoma County, in the French Bordeaux style by French winemakers Claire Villars-Lurton, and Gonzague Lurton. New to America with vineyards all over the world, they came here to take advantage of the beautiful wine growing conditions Sonoma County is known for. This delicious wine is for the adventurous. Looking to taste something new? All the grapes are grown on their own estate. This is an artistic blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot clearly display their hillside origins. Rocky soils created through volcanic activity millennia ago, contribute a mineral richness and add to the wine’s complexity and deep red fruit aromas. It’s purity and finesse show up immediately to the discerning palate.

Young Winemaker

2017 Maison Areione Chardonnay

2016 Cabernet Sauvignon

A winemaker making a name for himself in the Bay Area is Nicolas Vonderheyden. He knew from a young age that he would become a Vigneron (French for wine grower and vintner), and would be a willing celebrator of the process of coaxing the vines into wine. As he was learning wine production, he realized that the vigneron’s journey is not to control Nature, but to exalt and sublimate it. Read our article about him here: Featured: Maison Areion Wines.

  • 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon

  •
  • His small breakthrough production is known as Chaine d’Or Vineyards. His wines include 100% single vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains and farming with sustainable and organic practices. His first harvest was September 26, 2016. He makes his wine in the French traditional method: 2 pump overs/day, native yeast fermentation, aged in 100% French Oak for 14-18 months, a production of just 82 cases. We offer this limited edition Cabernet Sauvignon, having a full-fruit low-tannins taste profile.
